Today's topic is:

Does every game need to be a grade-A blockbuster title? Would you be willing to play more average games or should every game shoot for the 10.0 rating?

When I fist got the email from T. Bosky from GameCouch.com my brain kicked into full gear. I thought about all the huge releases ever since I first picked up the sticks and became the gamer I am today. However another thought in my mind also blinked into being. This is more of an opinionated argument. I thought about all the magazines and there "perfect score" games and how many of them actually coexsist with my "perfect score" games. Not many came to mind. When talking about a "perfect score" game, in who's mind are you surfing? See in my mind great games bring more to the table then just graphics and big names. They must bring innovation, storyline, and fun all in one neat little package. One of the most recent gaming achievements to me was Persona 3 for the PS2, although it did recieve a fair amount of positive reviews it never got above a 9.0 in rating scales if memory serves me right, however, in my mind that game deserved a 20. This is where we hit the wall, for some gamers, games like Gears of War, Halo, and Metal Gear Solid will always be the perfect 10. For other gamers, we tend to go the route of the Shin Megami Tensei series, Okami, and No More Heroes for our perfect games, but I digress. I believe that the gaming industry in its own right will be the harbringer of its own demise. As of late the industry has become a "follow the leader" of sorts. One game comes out and does something extremely well, sales go thru the roof, companies are happy, all is well. Another company takes that idea and modifies it in some way in an attempt to grasp that fame as well as the profits. There are a few shining examples of innovation that break their way thru the mountain of recycled polygons to example their greatness, but no where near enough in my opinion. As for would I play more "average" titles as opposed to "perfect 10" titles. Yes, but only if they are bringing something fresh into the gaming world. I believe that most of the grade-A titles do nothing more than slow the progression of gaming. I long for the day that solid refreshing games are available in abundance, rather than seeing more avertisement for the next Halo installment.

In closing, Grade-A titles are great, they help set the standard for the next line of FPS, RPG, or Action-Adventure, but seem to just chase their own tails. It's the so-called "average" games that smash down that wall and show us what gaming could be if we brought the creativity back. I will support the innovators, the creative, and the brave. Let's make the "average" games perfect.

I'm playing through Alone in the Dark right now, and it's definitely one of those not-so-great wall-smashers you mentioned. And you're spot-on about the chasing of tails.

I like games that make their own path and innovate. Which is why EVE Online is the MMO that I play. The whole sand box approach is to novel and to promising to pass by!

I played Okami! Very unique game. Yes, many 10's in video game industry are not really 10's in my book.

Good article :)

This reminded me why I like Earth Defense Force so much. There aren't enough games with giant ants. But, dude, stop using my picture!
